persistence and vision
camera
The camera’s image mimics the eye yet has the significant difference that it holds the vision still. When we are looking at photography, the still selected curated composed constructed space has little relation to the experience of seeing in real time. Rarely is there time to sit and experience a visual scene the way photography can distill the essence of a moment.
cyanotype
This is a simple, inexpensive, and much maligned early photographic process. It only requires that you have a negative that is the size of the print you desire, access to the sun, and a love of the color blue.
This is not all I have to say about that….
manipulation
I once thought that the negative, as framed in the camera, was untouchable, prime and perfect in origin. I directed all my past work by this overarching concept.
I now believe I should do whatever I see fit and appropriate in each work. Not that I proceed without constraints; I just choose them arbitrarily and daily.
To this end: some negatives are cut, taped back together, or drawn on. I am also no longer above drawing on the prints and enjoy the results of gilding them.
